I had a similar experience with the “gatekeeper” telling me that there are no petroglyph trails within the park and we’d need to head down to Santa Clara to the designated trail outside of the park. Bummer, I will be back to explore this more next time I’m down there.

Glad to hear that you had a great trip to St. George! Meadows Hot Spring is such a fun spot, too – and definitely a perfect stop to add on the way back to Salt Lake. -M

This last weekend, I went to St George with a friend and we used this article as our guide. We visited Snow Canyon, though the petroglyph trail was too far to get to, hiked up to the Vortex, then on Sunday visited Babylon Arch and drove over to Yant Flats. We even stopped by Meadow hot springs on the way back to Salt Lake City to round out the trip. Thanks for the great advice and suggestions- we loved it!

Bruce,
That’s a real bummer to hear that you had such a poor experience with the ranger at Snow Canyon. At the request of the park, we removed the info a few years back about how to get to the trail because they wanted people to go to the visitor center to get the info from the rangers since it’s a sensitive area. So, it’s really discouraging to hear that they are not being helpful. Unfortunately, we have not hiked the trail in a number of years and we’ve only done it from the private property access point. Again, I’m really sorry to hear that this didn’t work out for you.
Megan

At the Visitors Center, when we asked for directions, the Ranger was annoyed and said it is not a real trail and that people had to cross private property to get to the petroglyphs. She said the owners of the private property were annoyed by all the trespassing. The Ranger would not even tell us where to start. She described the slot canyon as a crack in a big rock and did everything she could to convince us to give up and not even try. It would be great if you can clarify details on about this trail.

The trail for the arch branches off to the right of the main trail that goes down to the river. It’s easy to miss.

My wife and I volunteered at Natural Bridges National Monument 2 times and loved the country around there. I wish I had seen all this while we were there. Now I’m thinking of going back to check St George I love taking pictures of Utah. Thanks for all you have here. Joe
